Policy Maker

As Windows 9x and NT platforms are phased out, and organizations move to predominantly Active Directory networks, Policy-based management is poised to perform many routine, but cumbersome tasks of desktop administration that once required scripting and desktop management applications such as Profile Maker.  Desktop Standard (formerly AutoProf) Policy Maker is a new and unique application that not only integrates with, but is Group Policy. It enables administrators to “Do it all with Group Policy!”

A natural extension of Group Policy, Policy Maker uses Microsoft’s Group Policy extension mechanisms both on client platforms and within the GPO editor. Policy Maker uses the same architecture as each of Microsoft’s extensions and does not modify the AD schema. As desktops are migrated to Windows 2000 and above, Group Policy, coupled with Policy Maker is the solution of choice for desktop management.

For organizations that require Profile Maker for support of legacy networks (as a migration or coexistence solution with AD-based networks), configurations are transferable between the applications (drag and drop) and both are easily managed from with the same MMC. Profile Maker will continue to be upgraded with the Policy Maker feature set as appropriate and will continue as a supported and viable solution.
